12 Jan Looking Ahead: Exceptional CLE Opportunities in 2026
As we close another impactful year of education and community in local government law, I find myself filled with anticipation for what’s in store for 2026 from a CLE perspective — a year packed with robust programming designed to meet your professional needs, whether you’re able to travel or prefer virtual learning.
In-Person Events Worth Planning For
We are back for our 2026 IMLA Mid-Year Seminar, returning to Washington, D.C., from April 10–13, 2026. This premier event will once again feature dual tracks tailored to the diverse practice areas of our membership — including a dedicated Section 1983 track alongside our traditional Local Government Law track (which will be sure to feature issues related to federal government changes given our location in the Nation’s Capital). We’re also honored to host our annual Supreme Court Update, featuring two distinguished former Solicitors General, Paul Clement and Elizabeth Prelogar, who will offer invaluable insights into the latest decisions affecting local government practice.
Looking ahead to the fall, please save the dates for the 91st Annual IMLA Conference, taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah, from September 23–27, 2026. In addition to delivering the depth and breadth of CLE programming you expect from IMLA, Salt Lake City offers a truly exceptional setting for our annual gathering. Nestled between the Wasatch Mountains and the Great Salt Lake, the city combines stunning natural beauty with a vibrant downtown, excellent dining, and easy access to outdoor exploration. Whether you choose to hike scenic trails, enjoy mountain views just minutes from the conference hotel, or take in the fresh air and walkable city center, Salt Lake City provides the perfect backdrop for learning, networking, and recharging.
We look forward to seeing you there!
We are also planning an IMLA in Canada program for our Canadian members in May 2026, with dates and additional details to be announced soon. This program reflects our ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, regionally relevant education for our members across North America.
Expanding Virtual Learning for All Budgets
For members facing travel or budget constraints, IMLA’s virtual programming continues to be a cornerstone of our educational mission. Throughout the year, we offer a wide range of subject-matter specific virtual CLE opportunities, including focused programming in Code Enforcement, Employment Law, and Section 1983, allowing you to stay current without leaving the office.
One of the highlights of our virtual offerings is the Kitchen Sink Program, which provides access to at least 40 webinars covering an array of topics essential to local government legal practice. It remains one of the best CLE values available, offering flexibility, depth, and practical insight for lawyers at every stage of their careers.
Why It Matters
Each of these educational offerings is crafted with the everyday realities of local government lawyers in mind — advancing your knowledge, strengthening your practice, and reinforcing the professional community that defines IMLA. I encourage you to mark your calendars now and take full advantage of the many ways to engage with IMLA in 2026.
Thank you for your continued commitment to excellence in local government law. We know budgets are tight, and we appreciate you trusting IMLA to deliver value for your training and CLE needs. I look forward to seeing many of you — in Washington, Salt Lake City, Canada, and online — in the year ahead.
Warm regards,
Amanda Karras
